5. Cusco, Peru

The Inca capital of Peru is Cusco. It is also a gateway to the legendary Machu Picchu. It’s a cosmopolitan area, situated at almost 3.500 above sea level. The area is loved by tourists who visit the place all year round. Although the number of people is only growing, it is safe to stay there even if you are a female travelling on her own. You can participate in many activities offered by the local agencies, take the famous Inca Trail or simply relax – the city has it all. What make the city so unique are, of course, its baroque architecture and cobblestone streets, outstanding local cuisine and friendliness of the people living there. Hop in a local store or central market and purchase handicraft or llama wool scarf as a souvenir. Horseback trips are also available for those who are willing to explore the area or take a day tour and see the Sacred Valley.
