4. Giant Sucking Vortices
A magnificent whirlpool may occur when two opposing currents meet, collide and slash. Some swirls are powerful enough to pull you downward where you will inevitably sink. The most powerful are also known as maelstroms. In general, all downward whirlpools are called vortices. The most famous maelstroms on the planet are the Moskstraumen located in the Lofoten Islands, the Saltstraumen found in Norway, and the Corryvreckan in Scotland.
